The XG series had a dedicated motor drive, the Winder G and the flagship of the series, the XG-M, could even be mounted on the 3.5-fps Motor Drive 1. All XG bodies featured an ☒ EV exposure compensation. By just slightly touching the release button, the photographer activated the electronics and the LEDs lit up for about 15 seconds. The big news was the so-called "Touch Switch": After powering the camera up via the main switch, it was in standby mode. In the aperture-priority automatic mode, the electronically governed shutter provided stepless speeds from 1s to 1/1000s.

They still used the outdated CdS metering system and had a competitive amazing shutter. As a first in the line-up of Minolta SLRs, these cameras were in need of a battery. Seriously, that and it being silver are very nearly the only differences. The Minolta XG series was launched together with the much more sophisticated Minolta XD series in 1977 as a budget line of small, lightweight, and easy-to-use electronic SLR with an automatic exposure mode. The XG-M is literally an x-700 without a program mode.
#XG7 MINOLTA CAMERA PLUS#
Plus it’s clearly the sexiest looking ) and it’s got every feature a camera of its vintage could have. The XD-11 is suuuuuuuper smooth to use, it’s got the heft and the feel of the SRT, but the electronic reliability of the X-700, and the only metal shutter between them (which is super smooth feeling, did I mention?). It’s also great to use in the super cold winter months because there’s really no battery to fail me. I love the heft and the mechanical KASLAP of the shutter, and it’s a real sharp looker. The SRT is super fun to use for nearly everything, but it’s a little lacking in low light. It’s unimpeachably great at metering, it’s light, I love the Motor Drive 1, it really makes the camera way easier to hold.
#XG7 MINOLTA CAMERA MANUAL#
The X-700 is my all time favorite manual focus.

I have at least a dozen more cameras than this, a rolleiflex, more polaroids, some plastic toy cameras, but these minoltas are something special I think.

I shot an uncounted amount of rolls last year but my binder is full of negative holders, and I’ve even done a small handful of paid shoots. I started developing my own film shortly after getting the SRT, and it’s been super rewarding.Īs a treat to myself I got the Maxxum 7 to return to the autofocus idea, and picked up the 70-210 beercan. The XG-M was a gift from a coworker after hearing about my minolta collection. All the while I’m learning to repair and calibrate these cameras, clean them, and restore them to their glory. I then started onto the manual focus cameras, going from the SRT 202 to the X-700, to the XD-11, picking up lenses and flashes and accessories along the way. Mind you I had no interest in photography at 26-27 years old, until I used this consumer level AF Minolta. I shot a roll or two, but wanted something faster, so I picked up the 50/1.7 to go on it. I remembered “Hey, my dad has a 35mm camera, maybe that’d be fun” and he gave me his Maxxum StSi with a sigma 28-200. I first got into film photography only about a year ago after shooting a pack of Polaroid Originals and falling in love with the idea of analog photography. This is my lovely collection of Minoltas.
